After realizing Hollow City is due back to the library in a couple of days, I decided to pick it up this morning, hoping to finish in time. The story swallowed me immediately. A fast-paced page turner, with compelling characters, and twists to keep you guessing. My first five-star read for 2017.

Hollow City: The Second Novel of Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children written by Ransom Riggs begins in Cairnholm an island off the coast of Wales.

Jacob, Emma, Bronwyn, Millard, Olive, Horace, Enoch, Hugh, Claire, and Fiona begin their adventure traveling in three small boats, rowing for their lives, attempting to reach the coast of Wales. Their headmistress, Miss Peregrine, is trapped in the body of a bird, their time loop destroyed, they must find another ymbryne who can help Miss Peregrine and restore their time loop.

The peculiar group finds a fantastic menagerie hidden in another loop. They are greeted by a talking dog named Addison MacHenry, and are introduced to Deirdre, a talking emu-raffe (half donkey half giraffe) and other peculiar animals (watch out for Armageddon chicken eggs – they explode). Headmistress of this menagerie, Miss Wren, has left to go help other ymbrynes – and so Jacob, the hollow-slayer, and his crew head to London, England, to find Miss Wren and save Miss Peregrine.

I love the photographs in the book. They are all found, vintage photographs.

I can’t wait to read the next book, Library of Souls.
